The first Pedal Power team cycling competition was presented February, 2009 by title sponsor GroundForce IT. The event was founded by the company’s President, Ethan Seltzer, an Ironman Florida finisher passionate about being outdoors, minimizing our impact on the environment and personal fitness. The team cycling competition and energy demonstration are combined to educate participants on self-sustaining activities to reduce our carbon footprint. Since the inaugural event, Pedal Power has incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization committed to advancing an energy-sustainability lifestyle through improved public awareness and education events.
Pedal Power is committed to educating the community on the many alternatives available to consumers for our sustainability. Pedal Power 2009 brought Richmond the first team-based cycling competition combined with an energy sustainability demonstration. There are many ways to reduce the carbon footprint and the Pedal Power event is just one way to do something good for yourself and the planet all at once. In 2009, seven individuals generated enough pedal power at almost 1100 Watts per half hour which could have:
• Powered a typical desktop computer for approximately 7.5 hours.
• Heated a traditional electric oven to 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
• Powered a standard refrigerator for about 7 hours.
• Powered a central AC system (2.5 tons) for about 20 minutes.
Yikes, just 20 minutes! That’s why it’s so important to keep your AC at a comfortable, yet moderate temperature.
